Water sports in the Wye Valley
This area provides opportunities for a wide variety of water sports, making great use of the River Wye, which is directly outside Garth Cottage.

There are hire companies that will rent you canoes or kayaks to glide down the river under your own power, stand up waterboards for the adventurous and further down the river in Chepstow you can find organised boat trips if you donít feel like paddling.

Anglers are also well served locally, not only in the river Wye, famous for its salmon, but also in a number of local lakes and streams offering a wealth of species to pursue, including trout, coarse fish and some fine specimen carp.

Many of our guests are members of classic or specialist car clubs that organise tours around the Wye Valley, Monmouthshire, South Herefordshire and the Forest of Dean.

For the casual observer, this also provides a great free classic car show, with gleaming examples of vehicles of all ages being lovingly prepared and driven through the glorious local scenery.

With atmospheric mist rising from the water and the peace and quiet that this area offers, you will find a beautiful start to your day of exploring, sightseeing or activities around South Herefordshire, Monmouthshire & the Wye Valley and the Forest of Dean.

The area is a natural magnet for artists and photographers.

When autumn comes, the area turns into a giant, natural kaleidoscope, with colours changing daily at different rates, thanks to the great variety of trees you will find here…

The Dinghy Boys paid us a visit...
OPne of the more extreme examples of water sport that has crossed the river Wye here at Symonds Yat was this collection of dinghies all roped together and piloted by a fun crowd of people, navigating the river Wye for pleasure and charity.

They pulled up at Garth Cottage for some good home comforts before carrying on undaunted towards the tidal parts of the river Wye.

Garth Cottage is perfectly placed for visitors to three great natural beauty spots in Britain. Sitting in Symonds Yat, right on the banks of the River Wye, the cottage borders the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, The Forest of Dean and South Herefordshire.

There is much to see and do here, from sightseeing around the many castles and abbeys in the area, which is also a bird-watcher's paradise, through to walks in the glorious countryside. These can be as gentle or as challenging as you like and the long experience we have in the area means that there is plenty of advice on choosing the perfect day out for you.

If you prefer an active break, the canoeing and water sports on the river Wye is in full swing by then, there is climbing, cycling, horse riding and miles of rambling within a stone's throw of Garth Cottage.
